A trip to a Fort

I went today to the roman fort Saalburg near the town of Bad Homburg.
The above picture is of the surrounding ruins, and that stone say that these are the bath areas, because the fort was located on hot springs.
This fort was built and inhabited from 90-233 A.D. at which point the military abandoned it with no sign of military attack, seemingly due to bad economic stability in the empire.

Discovered in 1854, the ruins underwent decades of archaeological inspection. In 1897, Kaiser Willhem the second, who was the last Emperor of Germany, requested that the ruins be reconstructed and the articles found to be recorded.
So Old!

The stone laying out the map of the fort.

The Imposing statue in front, and the doors are so heavy!

Although the walls are stone, apparently the romans caulked and painted them to look like they do on the left.

This well was 25M deep. Notice the children in the background? They were everywhere, ad horrendously behaved.

The Assembly Hall.
I had to have some coffee, but finding it to-go in Germany seems near impossible. It's nice in a way to be forced to have a sit down though.

The technology they had was amazing. This is an automatic cross bow. Notice the chain on it? it's amazing.
This is a pot lid, but I just love the imagry of the dog chasing a deer.
These pots were made with faces on them meant to scare away evil spirits.
The influence stems from the Celts whom the Romans came into contact with and gained skills from.

Petrified Asparagus!

These were instruments for surgery. It's amazing to see how none of these things has really changed much in 2000 years.

These are alter stones with really interesting inscriptions on them. There were tons of these.

On the Ruins.
